If you are dealing with hip pain in Narre Warren, you are certainly not alone. Hip discomfort is one of the most common reasons people walk through the door at Gravity Osteopathy, and it is something I see regularly from patients across the City of Casey, including Berwick, Cranbourne, and right here in Narre Warren. Hip pain can affect everything from your morning walk to getting in and out of the car, and it often leaves people wondering where it is coming from and what they can do about it. In this post, I want to share some of what I have learned about hip pain in my time as an osteopath — what may be contributing to it, how I approach it, and what you might expect if you come in for a consultation.

What May Be Causing Your Hip Pain

The hip is a remarkably complex joint, and hip pain does not always originate from the hip itself. When someone presents with hip pain at my Narre Warren clinic, one of the first things I consider is whether the discomfort is truly coming from the hip joint or whether it is referred from elsewhere — commonly the lower back, the sacroiliac joint, or even the knee. This is why a thorough assessment is so important.

Some common sources of hip pain that I see include osteoarthritis of the hip joint, tendinopathies (particularly of the gluteal tendons), bursitis such as trochanteric bursitis, muscle strains in the hip flexors or adductors, and irritation of the labrum — the ring of cartilage that lines the hip socket. Each of these conditions has its own pattern of symptoms, and the way I approach them varies accordingly.

It is also worth noting that lifestyle factors can play a significant role. Prolonged sitting, particularly for those working in office roles around Narre Warren and the broader City of Casey area, may contribute to hip flexor tightness and gluteal weakness. Conversely, people who are very active — runners, gym-goers, and those involved in local sports clubs in Berwick and Cranbourne — may experience overuse injuries that manifest as hip pain.

How I Approach Hip Pain as an Osteopath

When you come in to see me at Gravity Osteopathy, my first priority is understanding your story. I want to know when the pain started, what makes it better or worse, how it affects your daily life, and what your goals are. This conversation is often where the most important clues emerge.

From there, I conduct a physical assessment that typically includes observing how you move, testing the range of motion in your hips and surrounding joints, and performing specific tests to help identify which structures may be involved. I may also look at your lower back, pelvis, and knees, because as I mentioned earlier, hip pain is sometimes referred from these areas.

Based on what I find, I develop a management plan tailored to you. Osteopathic treatment may include a range of manual techniques such as soft tissue work, joint mobilisation, and gentle stretching. I also place a strong emphasis on education — helping you understand your body, what may be contributing to your pain, and what you can do at home to support your recovery. In some cases, I may recommend exercises to improve strength or mobility, or I may suggest modifications to your daily activities.

The Role of Movement and Lifestyle

One of the things I often discuss with patients is the concept of movement variety. Our bodies are designed to move in lots of different ways, but many of us fall into fairly repetitive movement patterns — or lack of movement patterns — that may contribute to hip pain over time. If you sit at a desk for most of the day and then go for a run in the evening, that is not inherently bad, but it does create a particular set of demands on your body.

I often encourage people to think about incorporating more variety into their movement. This might mean adding some gentle mobility work, trying a different form of exercise, or simply being more mindful of posture and positioning throughout the day. For those living in and around Narre Warren, the walking paths at Wilson Botanic Park in Berwick or the trails around Casey Fields in Cranbourne offer great opportunities to get moving in a low-impact way.

When to Seek Help for Hip Pain

While some hip discomfort may settle with rest and gentle movement, there are times when it is worth seeking professional assessment. If your hip pain has been persisting for more than a couple of weeks, is getting worse, is affecting your ability to do your normal activities, or is accompanied by symptoms such as swelling, redness, or pain that wakes you at night, I would encourage you to have it looked at.

It is also important to remember that hip pain is not something you just have to live with. Some people find that with the right guidance and a tailored approach, they are able to get back to the activities they enjoy — whether that is playing with the kids, running around Casey Fields, or simply walking the dog without discomfort.

Looking After Your Hips in Narre Warren

Hip pain can be frustrating, but understanding what may be contributing to it is often the first step toward feeling better. Whether your pain has come on gradually or started after a specific activity, the key is getting a proper assessment so that you can make informed decisions about your care.

If you are experiencing hip pain and would like to book a consultation, I would be happy to help. You can book an appointment online through the Gravity Osteopathy website or give the clinic a call. I work with patients from Narre Warren, Berwick, Cranbourne, and across the City of Casey, and I would welcome the opportunity to support you in understanding your hip pain and working toward your goals.
